Who we care for
Mountbatten Nursing Home is an inclusive and welcoming community – our residents range in age from 30 to 100 years old! This makes for a vibrant atmosphere and creates friendships that cross the generation gap. It’s something we are very proud of and marks us out as a nursing home with a difference.

Respite nursing care

We welcome temporary residents on a short-term basis for respite care. This might be because they have recently been discharged from hospital and need a period of additional convalescence before returning home, or they may be staying with us while their usual carer takes a much-needed break.

We work with you, your family/carer, or health and social care professionals to ensure appropriate respite care is provided. You can be sure of a warm welcome, the highest standards of care, and a team of experienced and caring staff who will make your stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible.

Complex health needs

Although many of our residents are in their later years, we also care for adults with complex health needs. We’ve got a vast amount of experience in dealing with a wide range of nursing needs. We are guided by the person in a holistic manner and what their care needs are in practice, rather than simply looking at their official diagnosis. If your loved one requires complex care, please contact us and we can discuss their needs and how we may be able to accommodate them here at Mountbatten.

Dementia

We offer compassionate care for those living with dementia too. We understand finding the right nursing home for a loved one with dementia can be very hard. And if you have been their carer for some time, the decision to move them into full time care can be very emotional. We will support you and your family to stay as involved as you wish to be in their day-to-day care, and you can relax in the knowledge that we very much believe in helping those living with dementia to join in activities and the general daily life of our home wherever possible.

Paula, our deputy matron, leads our dementia care team and is passionate about providing care that retains dignity and self-determination. Alongside giving essential nursing and personal care, you will often see Paula sitting with a resident holding their hand, smiling, and gently encouraging them to engage with their surroundings in their own way. She describes caring for those with dementia as her privilege.

Home cooked food

Our dedicated and talented team of 6 chefs and cooks provide a wide range of nutritious and delicious meals and snacks for both our residents and staff.

Home-cooked meals are a vital part of creating a home from home environment and all our meals are made in our own kitchens from scratch.

We offer a wide range of meals each week, from family favourites such as lasagne and cottage pie, to a traditional roast lunch on a Sunday, homemade cakes and puddings, and lots of fresh fruit, yogurts and snacks available throughout the day.

Local and seasonal produce

Wherever possible, we use local suppliers and seasonal produce, making the most of the array of locally produced meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables that Somerset is famed for.

As you’d expect, our kitchen team are all fully trained and hold relevant Food & Hygiene and First Aid qualifications. We are also rated at the highest level for food hygiene standards.

  • Tube feeding
  • Dietary allergies and intolerances, eg lactose, gluten, nuts etc
  • Vegetarian and vegan
  • Dietary choices based on cultural or religious beliefs

If you would like to talk to us about dietary requirements for yourself or a loved one, just get in touch. We’ll be happy to talk things through and answer any questions that you have.

Join a resident for lunch

We welcome visitors to join their loved ones for a meal, either in the dining room or in the resident’s own room. We just ask for some notice to ensure we have enough to go round!

Laundry on-site

Jenny runs our house keeping team and on-site laundry, and she does it with a smile! You’ll often see Jenny walking around the home delivering freshly laundered clothing back to our residents, and she’s more than happy to have a chat along the way.

Naturally, we have all the equipment needed to launder clothing for many people, along with larger items such as sheets and bedding, and doing everything on-site means clothing is far less likely to go astray. We simply ask that all clothing items are marked with the resident’s name, and this can be done with a name tape or even just marked with a Sharpie pen on the washing instructions label.

Activities

Ensuring our residents can take part in a range of activities, when they wish to do so, is at the heart of our approach.

Taking into account the resident’s interests, experiences and needs, we offer activities that support them to remain engaged and motivated, and of course just to spend some time doing something they love to do.

Our activities co-ordinator, Sadie, works with residents as a group and where appropriate on a 1-2-1 basis, offering games, trips and outings, armchair exercising, reading and music-based activities including:

  • Card and board games
  • Drawing and colouring
  • Reading books or listening to music
  • Sing alongs
  • Crosswords and puzzles
  • Watching favourite films and TV shows
  • Crafting and knitting
  • Local garden centre visit
  • Countryside drives
  • Pantomimes and local shows

External services

We have a number of external therapists and service providers that visit our home on a regular basis. From hairdressing, to chiropody, manicures, and massage therapy, our external services are charged as an additional fee but are designed to be able to take place in the privacy and comfort of a resident’s room.

We are able to support residents who wish to attend religious services at a local place of worship, but we can also organise for clergy of their chosen denomination to visit a resident within the home. A private room/area can be provided for this if requested.

Of course, if a resident would like a service we don’t currently provide on a routine basis, we’re always happy to try and find a suitable provider.
